Are There Alternatives to Nursing Home Care?

A Smithtown nursing home attorney can provide assistance to people who require nursing home care as a result of age, injury, or disability. According to the Wall Street Journal, a person who has reached the age of 65 has a 40 percent chance of ending up in a nursing home for at least some period of time and has a 20 percent chance of needing to stay in a nursing home for a period of no less than five years. Nursing homes can be extremely costly, and many seniors want to avoid them because they don’t want to give up their independence or experience what they see as diminished quality of life in an institutional setting. Smithtown nursing home attorney

If you are concerned that you may end up in a nursing home some day and you want to explore alternatives for getting care, you should work with an experienced attorney as soon as possible. Mark S. Eghrari & Associates PLLC will assist you in taking steps to research all of your care options so you can make the most informed choice when it comes to where you can get care.

We can also provide you with help in making certain that you can get nursing home care or other types of care paid for— ideally, without having to spend your entire life savings on the care that you are getting. To find out more about the assistance that we can offer and to discuss alternatives to nursing home care that could be right for you, give us a call today.

What are Some Alternatives to Nursing Home Care?

There are many different alternatives to nursing home care, but your ability to take advantage of these alternatives will depend upon the level of care that you actually require as well as your ability to afford the costs of care.

One option that you could consider is to get long term care help in your own home. This care could be provided by home health aides, especially if you need only occasional care. Home health aides could, for example, come once a day or a few times per week to help you tend to activities of daily living like bathing and preparing meals. You could supplement the services of home health aides with adult daycare services where you go to a program during the day and get further help. Meals-on-wheels and other community-based programs could also help you to stay in your home longer and get care.

If you need more intensive services or more specialized services, you may need a visiting nurse to come to your home instead of just a home health aide if you want to continue living independently. And, in some cases, even with visiting care professionals, living alone will still become unsafe or impossible and you will need to consider moving in with family members or moving to some type of care facility.

Another alternative that could be an option is to move into an assisted living facility. Assisted living facilities can often provide you with more privacy and independence than a nursing home would, but this comes at a price: less care and support is provided to you. There are a wide array of different assisted living facilities, some of which offer more intensive services than others. Some facilities don’t offer much at all, other than perhaps transportation and social activities. Others will do more for you, but still won’t provide the same level of services as a nursing home.

You need to carefully consider what types of help you need, and also research to find out if Medicaid or any type of insurance will provide you with coverage.
