Doing your research to find the right nursing home is very important because not all nursing home are created equal. In fact, in some nursing homes, residents receive substandard care and are at risk of dangerous neglect or abuse. One recent tragic incident reported on by US News & World report shows what can happen when nursing homes provide inadequate care and demonstrates why it is essential to research care facilities to find the right one.
Trial Begins for Nursing Home Care Workers
Finding the right nursing home facility is important because he consequences can be devastating when a nursing home fails to fulfill its obligations to patients. Just recently US News & World report indicated that a criminal trial is underway involving charges against staff members in a nursing home. The nursing home workers reportedly ignored an alarm that went off when the patient became detached from a ventilator. The patient died, and the staff members are facing felony charges for criminal negligent homicide and for a willful violation of health laws.
The incident led to the death of an 81-year-old in an extended care facility in the Uniondale area. Staff members heard three different alarms indicating that the patient had become disconnected from her ventilator. However, the staff members waited a full nine minutes to respond to the alarms, which was too long for the woman.
An attorney for the nursing home staff members indicated that they waited a long time to respond because there were a significant number of false alarms that had occurred recently. The attorney described it as “alarm fatigue.” However, despite the fact that staff members may be tired of false alarms, it remains their job to respond when an alarm goes off during the time they are working and responsible for patients. Because they failed to respond, the patient in this particular incident lost her life and the staff members are now facing the potential for jail time and a criminal record.
